Description of Binalong
Binalong lies about 30km north-west of Yass and 30km south of Boorowa, some 475m above sea level on the edge of the Southern Tablelands.
The land around it was on the traditional borders of the Wiradjuri and Ngunawal peoples,
often the scene of territorial disputes under the pressure of encroaching European settlement which contributed to the decline of the Ngunawal tribes.
Between 1841 and 1851 the local indigenous population fell from about 800 to 300 indigenous people.

Binalong - Small and interesting historic village once the home of 'Banjo' Paterson.
One of Australia's best-known poets, A.B. 'Banjo' Paterson, moved to nearby 'Illalong' station
(opposite the Illalong Quarry on the Yass Rd) at the age of five, when his father bought the property in 1869.
The bank foreclosed but Paterson Snr stayed on as the manager of 'Illalong' and of two adjoining properties.
'Banjo' attended school at Binalong but, in 1874, was sent to a grammar school in Sydney, returning to the station in the summer holidays.
The township featured in and influenced a number of his poems (e.g., 'The Bush Christening'). His father is buried in the local cemetery.

Around Binalong
St Patrick's Church is a handsome bluestone structure, built in 1911 to replace the old church of St Peter and Paul's,
which dated from 1859 and is now in ruins.
St Peter and Paul's played an important part in the lives of the early inhabitants of Binalong,
and on its hill overlooking the village would have seen the shooting of bushranger Johnny Gilbert in 1865;
Banjo Paterson ride his horse to Binalong Public School to attend classes;
and the Cobb and Co coaches stop at the inn that has become the Black Swan Restaurant.
